MOS FOR WINDOWS:
THE FIRST ATM QUALITY OF SERVICE MANAGER

First Virtual's MOS (Multimedia Operating Software) is middleware that enables out-of-the-box Windows applications to run over ATM. MOS runs "invisibly" under the application layer and above the network layer, enabling applications written on Microsoft Windows standards to transparently leverage ATM's quality of service parameters. Unlike other ATM solutions which basically use LAN Emulation, MOS brings the power of ATM all the way to the application, resulting in high-quality voice, video, text and images to the desktop.

Enhances Your Existing NOS

MOS enhances, rather than replaces, your current Network Operating System, leveraging the management, security, and authentication features while augmenting these capabilities with multimedia streaming services.

V-TV Application Support

To expand the capabilities of MOS even further, MOS now supports First Virtual's V-TV application, enabling you to play NTSC and PAL broadcast streams on your PC.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • ATM Quality of Service Manager. Simultaneously handles native ATM classes of service and other popular multimedia traffic streams, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and H.320. With MOS, existing out-of-the-box Windows multimedia applications can immediately take advantage of ATM classes of service for guaranteed end-to-end quality.
  • Application Enabler. Brings ATM classes of service directly to the application, resulting in high-quality voice, video, text and images to the desktop.
  • Open Architecture. Any application that is written to standard Windows APIs can use MOS, automatically gaining the benefits of ATM.
  • Network Redirection. Provides network redirection for access to multimedia files residing on MOS-enabled servers such as First Virtual's V-Cache, V-Gate, and V-Caster.
  • Optimized Flow of Multimedia Information.Using sophisticated caching algorithms, MOS is able to allocate the necessary quality of service to efficiently deliver delay-sensitive multimedia traffic and loss-sensitive data traffic. By insuring the data is always there right when the application needs it, MOS optimizes the quality of multimedia storage and playback.
  • Coexistence with existing NOS. Applications that do not need a quality of service-enhanced NOS can continue to run over popular NOSes such as Novell NetWare, Microsoft Netbeui, or TCP/IP for access to existing file servers, databases, or groupware servers.

Integration with Popular Applications

MOS enables complete, seamless integration of multimedia information with mainstream applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Lotus Notes. Windows users can directly incorporate networked multimedia objects, such as Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), into applications since MOS provides transparent redirection of multimedia streams.
