Personal Security Module

Objectives

The objective of this project is to enable the use of smart cards for authentication applications. In the short term, the PSM architecture and API will be validated with the Unix login. In the longer term,we intend to validate it with other applications such as DCE/Kerberos and public key.

In the contect of the Unix login, users of the Personal Security Module are the backends of the Personal Authentication Module, the module that unifies the different login mechanisms (Unix, DCE, Kerberos, Public Key, etc.).

Funding and Partners

This project started in July 1996, and was completed in February 1997. It is sponsored by the Hewlett-Packard Grenoble Network and Security Division. It complies with the standard PKCS-11 interface specified by RAS. For the smart card, it uses an HP smart card device attached to an HP work-station running HP-UX.

A White Paper introducing the notion of Personal Security Module (PSM) and the integration of Smart Cards into the Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) is available.
