OVERVIEW
The ACX-100 is a third generation ATM Workgroup
Switch which brings industry-standard,
high-performance ATM to the desktop at affordable
prices. The ACX-100 enables high-speed LAN
connectivity while supporting real-time voice, video
and data communications. Featuring an optional 155
Mbps (OC3c) uplink, redundant load-sharing power
supplies, LAN Emulation, Classical IP and SNMP
management, the ACX-100 is ideal for workgroups with
up to 12 users. With a high-speed OC3c uplink, the
ACX-100 is designed to extend new or existing
high-performance ATM networks.
ARCHITECTURE
The ACX-100 is a full-featured, self-contained ATM
switch. Non-blocking, full-duplex switching is
maintained with a high-speed 1 Gbps full-duplex
switching fabric which provides low latency and fast,
non-blocking cell-switching performance.
The compact design only 1.75 inches (4.45 cm)
high provides high port density in either desktop
or rack-mount configurations, and supports optional
power supply redundancy.
INTEROPERABILITY
AVIDIA's ACX-100 fully meets the ATM Forum UNI 3.0
and UNI 3.1 standards, assuring multivendor PVC/SVC
interoperability at both the PC/workstation and
high-speed uplink level. The ACX-100 is compatible
with virtually all standard 25 and 155 Mbps ATM
adapters (available from AVIDIA Systems or elsewhere)
and with all popular backbone ATM switches.
SIMPLIFIED ATM
The ACX-100 enables higher productivity in today's
corporate networks by providing not just more
bandwidth, but better bandwidth by virtue of ATM's
high performance, connection-oriented nature.
AVIDIA's LAN Emulation and Classical IP software
allows existing LAN protocols to work transparently
over ATM. It greatly simplifies the network manager's
job by giving routers, PCs, and servers, the
appearance of traditional LAN devices. With LANE, the
ACX-100 supports the attachment of routers and
servers which can be upgraded with ATM interfaces to
greatly boost their bandwidth while they continue to
serve Ethernet and Token Ring segments.
To the user, the ACX-100 simply enables existing
applications to work better. To the network planner,
the ACX-100 enables the immediate deployment of new
productivity applications such as desktop video,
telephony, and high-speed Internet/Intranet access.
SIMPLIFIED SOFTWARE
PersistentPath(tm) software makes call set-up and
management rapid and simple. Switched Virtual
Circuits (SVCs) are rapidly established, and can be
maintained indefinitely. Once a call is established,
PersistentPath insures that additional traffic can
traverse the network without needing to re-establish
a call. PersistentPath eliminates the need to
"time out" SVCs by prioritizing the SVC
shared buffer memory and reassigning new SVCs as
needed. PersistentPath automatically prioritizes SVC
assignments based on class of service, assuring ATM
Quality of Service while minimizing call set-up time.
The result is faster, better and more consistent
network performance and reduced network
administration costs.
HIGH PERFORMANCE
The CMOS ASIC-based high-speed, low-power 1 Gbps
switching fabric provides more than twice the
capacity needed to service the full duplex
25 Mbps and 155 Mbps ATM ports. By using
highly-integrated complex VLSI ASIC devices, the
ACX-100 ensures worry-free buffer management, low
cell latency, full support of Quality of Service
(QoS) for multimedia applications, and low power
consumption. This results in cooler operation and
greater reliability.
NETWORK MANAGEMENT
The ACX-100 is automatic and self-learning, and
does not require a special network management system
or application. Initial set-up is done through a
simple ASCII serial port. Full support for SNMP
(RFC-1157/1212) with AVIDIA extensions provides
configuration and fault management from any standard
SNMP platform such as HP OpenView(tm). When used with
AIMS(tm) (AVIDIA Internet
Management Server) software, the ACX-100 can be
managed from any location in the world by using a
standard Java(tm) - enabled browser (such as Netscape
Navigator(tm)) via the Internet or via a private
network.
The ACX-100 ATM Workgroup Switch provides up to
twelve 25 Mbps ATM ports for high-speed connectivity
within a workgroup and a 155 Mbps OC3c port for a
high-speed workstation, server, or uplink to an ATM
network.
