AVIDIA Systems, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PairGain Technologies, Inc., the market leading manufacturer of communications products with 1996 revenues in excess of US $205 million.

AVIDIA Systems was founded in 1995 to lead the revolution in PC Networking using Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) solutions at affordable prices. The company's mission is to deliver innovative ATM switching and networking products for the millions of PC's in corporate networks. AVIDIA's focus is on:

  • Enabling PC's with high speed advanced networking
  • High performance PC Workgroups
  • High speed Internet access and Intranet communications
  • Data, Voice, Image, and Video distribution via ATM LANs

AVIDIA believes that ATM is clearly the best technology choice for networking, but that it's use should not command a significant cost premium over legacy technology. The Company's breakthrough products provide PC's and workstations with significant network performance advantages for existing applications while supporting emerging real-time multimedia desktop applications.

AVIDIA's innovative products include the ACX Series of ATM switches which support both 25 Mbps and 155 Mbps ATM ports. The company's rapid product development and early market success was possible because of the founder's expertise in ATM/Telecom system design, understanding of the technology, experience, and a fundamental belief that advanced high performance ATM technology should be available at low cost. To this end, the company established its "ATM for the rest of us™" campaign, bringing the cost/performance ratio of ATM products to previously unheard of levels. Today, AVIDIA is delivering advanced ATM switches at prices that compete with legacy Ethernet technology.

Each member of the management team has over fifteen years experience in the communications and computer industry, and has held senior positions with such leading companies as FORE Systems, TranSwitch, General DataComm, and 3Com. This experience and specialized skill has allowed AVIDIA to rapidly develop and bring to market the ACX Series of ATM Switches. By rapidly and consistently introducing new, richly-featured products, and through industry partnerships around the world, AVIDIA is establishing itself as the market leader in ATM LAN products and services.

Management Team

  • Paul Sun - President - Paul has over 15 years extensive experience in complex hardware and software product development, and was a founding engineer at TranSwitch Corporation, an industry leading producer of ATM, SONET and other communications related silicon chip sets. Prior to AVIDIA, Paul was the Manager of ATM Product Development at TranSwitch, and was responsible for the design of the chips now used in AVIDIA's products. Paul has also held positions at Control Data Corporation and Motorola Semiconductor Corporation
  • Paul Eaton - Vice President, Hardware Design and Manufacturing Operations - Paul has over 20 years of comprehensive hardware and system project management experience. Prior to joining AVIDIA, Paul was President and founder of American Manufacturing & Design Inc. He also held various engineering and project management positions at DataSwitch, ChannelNet, and Philips Medical Systems.
  • David Jenkins - Director of Software Development - Dave has over 18 years experience in technical management and software development. Prior to joining AVIDIA, Dave was president and founder of Visionary Systems, a manufacturer of desktop parallel supercomputer PC cards. Dave has also held engineering and management positions at ITT and Bourroughs.
  • Dr. Andreas D. Bovopoulos - Director of Architecture - Andreas, a recognized expert in the area of ATM multimedia networking, brings to AVIDIA 13 years of industrial and academic networking experience. Prior to joining AVIDIA, Andreas worked for 3Com and Chipcom. Before Chipcom, Andreas was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis. He has published over 35 papers in journals and conferences, and has spoken in numerous national and international forums.
  • Rich Mavrogeanes - Director of Marketing - Rich has some 20 years experience in the industry, including positions in manufacturing, engineering, sales, and marketing. Prior to joining AVIDIA, Rich was Director of Marketing at General DataComm, a world class supplier of ATM switches and datacommunications equipment and services. Rich has also held positions with Dataproducts and Datacomm Management Sciences.
  • Mike Centrella - VP Sales - Michael has over 15 years of sales and marketing experience in the computer and networking industry. Prior to joining AVIDIA, Mike was a Director of Sales for FORE Systems. He also has held various senior sales management positions at Kalpana (cisco), 3Com, Saros (FileNet), and Texas Instruments.
  • David Perry - Director Sales for Europe, Africa, Middle East - David has 11 years of experience with Texas Instruments Ltd. in product management and marketing, and was a founder member of the sales team at Madge Networks. David has worked extensively with both end users and channel partners in Europe and the United States, and most recently worked for FORE Systems as a UK country manager where he now resides.
