OVERVIEW
The ACX-1200 is an innovative, high- capacity
third generation ATM Workgroup Switch which brings
high-performance ATM to the desktop at affordable
prices. In addition to industry standard ATM
switching, the ACX-1200 features comprehensive WAN
support including T1/E1, ISDN, and Frame Relay. An
integral router and WEB server provides Internet
access and Intranet communications.
The ACX-1200 provides PCs with the benefits of
high-speed ATM access to local file servers and a
connection to a new or existing ATM backbone, while
providing a local Internet/Intranet WAN gateway.
The ACX-1200 supports up to one hundred twenty 25
Mbps ports and ten 155 Mbps (OC3c) links, redundant
load-sharing power supplies, Classical IP, LAN
Emulation, PNNI, SNMP and AVIDIA's Java(tm)-enabled
network management software making it the ideal
high-capacity ATM switch for corporate and branch
offices.
The ACX-1200 is designed to extend new or existing
high-performance ATM networks, and may form the high
performance segment of a legacy local area network,
enabling the transition to ATM without incurring the
cost of a major backbone upgrade.
ARCHITECTURE
Up to ten ACX switch modules, each with twelve 25
Mbps ports and one 155 Mbps port, are supported by
the ACX-1200's 3 Gbps switching fabric. The ACX-1200
also supports AVIDIA's integrated processor which
supports Legacy LAN connections, hosts a WEB server,
and processes traffic for presentation to the wide
area network via T1, E1, ISDN, and Frame Relay.
SIMPLIFIED ATM
AVIDIA's LAN Emulation and Classical IP allows
existing LAN protocols to work transparently over
ATM. It greatly simplifies the network manager's job
by giving routers, PCs, and servers, the appearance
of traditional LAN devices. With LANE, the ACX-1200
supports the attachment of routers and servers which
can be upgraded with ATM interfaces to greatly boost
their bandwidth while they continue to serve Ethernet
and Token Ring segments.
To the user, the ACX-1200 simply enables existing
applications to work better. To the network planner,
the ACX-1200 enables the immediate deployment of new
productivity applications such as desktop video,
telephony, and high-speed Internet/Intranet access.
SIMPLIFIED SOFTWARE
PersistentPath(tm) software makes call set-up and
management rapid and simple. Switched Virtual
Circuits (SVCs) are rapidly established, and can be
maintained indefinitely. Once a call is established,
PersistentPath insures that additional traffic can
traverse the network without needing to re-establish
a call. PersistentPath eliminates the need to
"time out" SVCs by prioritizing the SVC
shared buffer memory and reassigning new SVCs as
needed. PersistentPath automatically prioritizes SVC
assignments based on class of service, assuring ATM
Quality of Service while minimizing call set-up time.
The result is faster, better and more consistent
network performance and reduced network
administration costs.
OPEN, FLEXIBLE and SCALEABLE
The ACX-1200's modular 12-slot design allows for
growth. Users can start with 12 ports and add modules
as requirements grow and change. Each ACX-1200
supports connections for up to 120 networked PCs, and
up to ten high-speed file servers, high-performance
workstations, or high-speed uplinks.
Thanks to AVIDIA's OpenFlex(tm) design, the
ACX-1200 supports an integral, standards-based PC
which supports comprehensive WAN processing. It also
allows for other standards-based software
applications to be added as requirements grow and
change. The OpenFlex(tm) architecture takes advantage
of the many software and hardware PC-based
applications being developed around the world, and
enables their rapid integration within the ACX-1200.
This provides a standards-based path for continuous
feature growth.
NETWORK MANAGEMENT
The ACX-1200 is automatic, self-learning, and does
not require a special network management system or
application. Initial set-up is done through a simple
ASCII serial port. Full support for SNMP v1
(RFC-1213) with AVIDIA extensions provides
configuration and fault management from any standard
SNMP platform, such as HP OpenView(tm). When used
with the integral AIMS(tm)
(AVIDIA Internet Management Server) software, the
ACX-1200 can be managed from any location in the
world by using any standard Java(tm)-enabled browser
(such as Netscape Navigator(tm)) via the Internet, or
via a private network.
INTEGRATED WAN INTERNET/INTRANET
ACCESS
The ACX-1200 enables more productivity in today's
corporate networks by providing not just more
bandwidth, but intelligent bandwidth. The ACX-1200
allows independent workgroups and branch offices to
deploy high-performance ATM to the desktop while
providing each location with its own
Internet/Intranet gateway. The ACX-1200 is ideal for
medium to large corporate or branch offices. It
provides high-speed connectivity for PCs, multiple
155 Mbps OC3c interfaces for high-performance access
to local servers, workstations, and ATM backbone
switches, while continuing to provide robust WAN
access.
The ACX-1200 ATM Access Switch provides up to one
hundred twenty 25 Mbps ATM ports for high- speed
connectivity within a workgroup, and provides up to
ten 155 Mbps OC3c ports for high-speed workstations,
servers, and for uplink to an ATM network, and
provides integral T1/E1/ISDN, Frame Relay, and
Internet/Intranet access.
Independent ATM workgroups at small, medium, and
large offices may be equipped with high-performance
ATM in the local environment, and Internet access for
Intranet communications between branch offices.
In a large office, an AVIDIA Workgroup Switch may
be located on each floor and interconnected via 155
Mbps OC3c links without needing a higher capacity
backbone switch.
